A new house addition and a tall deck propose a unique challenge. How do we expand living space to include the walkout patio, yet make the space function cohesively? This solution provides a range of usable spaces – from the sunny deck on a cool fall morning to the lower patio in the heat of summer. A sculptural water feature of basalt columns bubbles gently for a peaceful sound heard from both the deck and patio. Basement windows forced the cedar pergola to attach to the house, eliminating a row of posts and creating more usable patio space. A simple planting palette accents this multi-tiered space.
